Research - Music Video Exemplar

Same video above and below (sometimes one does not work)

Before I jump into storyboarding and further planning my idea I feel it will help analysing a music video to look at its structure and analyse some of the themes and ideas it uses.

Parallel editing is used throughout where the director has chosen to constantly cut back and forth between the performance and the narrative. In addition, cuts have been made on the beat to add to the effect while numerous close ups and fast camera tracking/zooming has been used at the more exciting moments in the video. The close ups allow us to see their facial expression while the medium shots allow us to the the many people and their location.

A high contrast of colours and lighting is used, this made me concentrate on what the director intended the audience to focus on. While the actors and artists are lit, the background it dark so it doesn't distract us - almost like a 'spotlight'.

Slow motion is used in significant parts to emphasise importance. In addition, clever transforming transitions are used towards the end of the music video, the colours in the room and locations change in a subtly smooth way.

I particularly like how the the artists aggressively sing towards the camera. I feel it engages the audience as it is natural to look back at someone who is looking at you.

As the artists are performing on stage (to an audience within the video) it feels like people watching the video 'join' the audience witin the video. The fact they are on a stage also reinforces the stereotype of a rock band. In stark contrast, a pop group usually perform in a studio (perhaps with backing dancers).

As my song/band is also rock. Therefore, I should learn from other rock music videos such as this one. However, I do not want to completely stick to the convention of rock music videos and experiment by breaking the traditional conventions of a rock music video.
